The Government has not been Indexing Medicare Schedule fees adequately for many years. The reality is that Medicare rebates do not cover the cost of providing you with a safe and high-quality service. The fees charged by this practice have to cover all of our practice costs, including employing receptionists and meeting our operating expenses such as rent, medical equipment, electricity, computers, and insurance. It is not possible for this practice to meet our running costs each year without increasing our fees.
Safety Net
For individuals and families registered for the Safety Net, once you have paid $2414 in “out-of-pocket” expenses in a calendar year, Medicare will refund 80% of your out-of- pocket expenses (essentially once you have seen your psychiatrist for approximately 12 sessions in a calendar year, most of the cost of a session will be refunded from Medicare) The Extended Medicare Safety Net-Concessional and Family Tax Benefit Part A- is $770.30.
Initial Consult Fee
The Medicare rebate for initial consultations is greater than the Medicare rebate for ongoing consultations. The increased "out of pocket cost" reflects the increased work the Psychiatrist is required to complete, after the consultation, to finalise a comprehensive assessment, formulate a management plan, and communicate with your referring Dr.
Concerns
If you have extenuating circumstances, please discuss these with your treating medical practitioner. If you wish to let the Government know that the Medicare rebate is insufficient to assist you in meeting the cost of your medical care, please contact the Minister of Health and/or your local Member of Parliament at:
Psychologist Fees
Just to let my clients and future clients know there will be a fee increase – or should I say a return to my charges at the beginning of 2020 before COVID 19 hit us at the end of March, whereby I wanted to do the right thing and help everyone out. From Tuesday 6 th April 2021 (after Easter) my charge will revert back to the pre COVID rate of $200.00. I hope this is acceptable to you and we can continue to work together. FYI the cost set by the APS to see a Psychologist in Australia is $260.00 for a 50 minute session, a timeline that I very rarely stick to as you will well know!!
Alison charges $260 for a 50 min consultation that reduces to $170 with a Mental Health Care Plan or referral from a psychiatrist. Please note that once the medicare safety net is reached ($2414 per calendar year), medicare will rebate 80% of the session fee.
